What is GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)?

Three terms, one job. The useful question is not which word is correct but whether the person using it can show you a measurement.

GEO stands for Generative Engine Optimization. It means getting your brand named and cited inside answers produced by generative search — Google's AI Overviews, Gemini, ChatGPT, Perplexity.

If that sounds like the definition of AEO, that is because it substantially is.

Three terms, one job

TermUsually means
AEO — Answer Engine OptimizationBeing named in answers from assistants generally
GEO — Generative Engine OptimizationBeing named in generative results inside search engines
AI SEOBroad umbrella; sometimes also means using AI to do ordinary SEO

The emphasis differs slightly. The work does not: make the brand legible to a machine, answer real questions in an extractable form, and build a footprint the model did not have to take your word for.

A practical filter. If someone draws a sharp methodological distinction between GEO and AEO and prices them differently, ask what they would do differently on a Tuesday. In our experience the answer is nothing.

Why the terms multiplied

The category is new enough that nobody owns the vocabulary. When we tested thirty buyer questions across three engines, the most-recommended agency appeared in six of thirty runs and roughly sixty other names appeared once or twice.

That is what an unsettled market looks like, and unsettled markets generate competing labels — each new entrant hoping theirs becomes the standard. Expect consolidation. Do not wait for it before measuring where you stand.

How to judge someone selling GEO

Four questions, and they are quick:

  1. "How will you measure it?" The answer should involve repeated runs across multiple engines with saved transcripts. "We'll check ChatGPT" is not a measurement.
  2. "What is my baseline today?" Any work that starts without one cannot be evaluated later. Insist on the number before anything begins.
  3. "What would prove this did not work?" A good answer exists and is specific. If there is no condition under which they would say it failed, you cannot tell success from drift.
  4. "Can I see the transcripts?" Raw saved runs, not a summary written afterwards.

What nobody can honestly promise

There is no advertising slot inside a generated answer. Nobody can buy you a mention, and nobody can guarantee one.

What can honestly be promised is a measured baseline, a specific set of changes, and an honest re-measurement on the same terms — including the case where the number did not move.

That last part is the test. Anyone unwilling to report a flat result is not measuring.
